Program Description:
Many among the growing population of people living with and beyond cancer face increased risk of cardiovascular disease. This course equips you with current clinical insights and practical strategies to support cardiovascular health in people across the cancer continuum.
You’ll learn about key contributors to increased CVD risk among cancer survivors and explore how to adapt a healthy dietary pattern to meet their unique needs and concerns. And you’ll examine what current research related to obesity, body composition, and weight change adds to this picture.
Designed for RDNs in practice settings in cardiac rehab, cancer centers, survivorship programs, cardiology, private practice and more, this program will enhance your confidence and clarity in delivering evidence-informed, individualized care in a growing client population.
Learning Objectives:
By the end of this 3½ -hour course, you will be able to:
- Analyze the interrelationship between cancer treatment, survivorship, and increased cardiovascular disease (CVD) risk.
- Evaluate current research on dietary patterns and lifestyle factors that influence both cancer-related and cardiovascular outcomes across the cancer continuum.
- Apply evidence-based principles of high-quality dietary patterns to guide personalized nutrition strategies that support heart health and cancer survivorship.
- Discuss the health implications of food and food group choices — including added sugars, processed foods, red and processed meats, dairy, and soy foods — within a plant-forward dietary approach.
- Interpret current evidence on obesity, body composition, sarcopenia, and weight change to support nuanced, individualized nutrition counseling for people living with and beyond cancer.
- Formulate client-centered recommendations that align with current cardio-oncology nutrition guidance and support patients and clients in setting meaningful, sustainable priorities amidst an information environment that can often be overwhelming.
